Homemade Bungeo-ppang (Korean fish shape pancake)

It's getting colder,  Why not try keeping warm with this snack this winter.

Bungeo-ppang is a popular Korean street food that is often referred to as "fish-shaped pancake". It is a sweet, pancake that is typically filled with red bean paste. The bread is made by pouring a pancake-like batter into a fish-shaped mold and then adding the sweet filling before closing the mold. It is then cooked until it becomes golden brown and has a crispy outer shell.

Bungeo-ppang is a delicious and nostalgic snack in South Korea and is commonly found at street food stalls, markets, and festivals. It is enjoyed by people of all ages and is often consumed as a warm and comforting treat, especially during the colder months. While red bean paste is the most traditional filling, you can sometimes find variations with other fillings like custard.

Bungeo-ppang is a sweet and slightly crispy pastry, so it pairs well with a variety of beverages, both hot and cold, to balance its flavours. Here are some drink options that go well with Bungeo-ppang:

    • Milk: A glass of milk is a classic choice to enjoy with sweet pastries like Bungeo-ppang. The creamy milk can help balance the sweetness.

    • Coffee: A cup of coffee, whether black or with milk, can be a good choice for those who enjoy the combination of coffee's bitterness with the sweetness of the pastry.

    • Green Tea: A warm cup of green tea, such as traditional Korean green tea or matcha, complements the sweet and slightly nutty flavours of red bean paste in Bungeo-ppang.

    • Sikhye (Korean Rice Punch): Sikhye is a traditional Korean sweet rice drink with a slightly fizzy and nutty flavor. It pairs nicely with Bungeo-ppang, and the combination of textures can be delightful.

    • Fruit Juice: A glass of fruit juice, like orange juice, apple juice, or grape juice, can be a good choice to add a fruity element to your snack.

    • Iced Tea: If you prefer a cold drink, consider iced tea, such as black or green tea. A lightly sweetened iced tea can be a refreshing contrast to the warm pastry.
